About Son La Province

Climate
Son La is a high altitude mountainous province in the northwest of Vietnam, with a humid subtropical climate, cold and dry winter, hot and humid summer and a lot of rain. Rain is concentrated in July and August.
The province is located in the monsoon-influenced climate area of the Asia, therefore it has two distinct seasons. However, its topographical characteristics add unique features to the wind regime in the area. Son La is less affected by typhoons than other regions, but the rainfall here significantly differs between the rainy and dry season.
Highly divided terrain forms many climate sub-regions in the province, thus allowing the ago-forestry production to diversify. Moc Chau plateau is suitable for temperate crops and livestock production. The area along the Da River is fit for tropical forest greenery all year round… All constitute a rich ecosystem with a variety of crops and livestock, giving rise to the development of specialty agricultural products in Son La province.
Son La has the third largest area of natural forest out of 63 provinces and cities of Vietnam. The land area in use currently accounts for 39.08% of the total. Fertile soil, thick arable layer with abundant nutrients and topography allows the development of many economically valuable crops and livestock.
Son La is divided into different ecological and topographical regions. It has two large plateaus, Moc Chau and Na San. Moc Chau Plateau has an average altitude of 1,050 m above sea level, characterized by a sub-temperate climate, fertile soil, favorable for the development of tea, fruit trees and dairy farming.
